  • Alumni Update

11/1/2010 - Penn State women's soccer forward Tani Costa (91 Premier/Kalani) was named the Big Ten's Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon. Additionally, Costa garnered TopDrawerSoccer.com's Player of the Week honor. The redshirt-freshman put five goals in the net last week in two games against Indiana and Purdue.

Costa, now a two-time Freshman of the Week honoree, earned her first Offensive Player of the Week accolade thanks to her impressive five-goal performance. The standout forward notched her first career hat trick against Indiana on Thursday, Oct. 28 in a 6-1 Penn State win before collecting two more goals against Purdue on Sunday in another 6-1 win in West Lafayette, Ind. Previously, Costa was named the league's best freshman on Oct. 11 for her three-point day at Iowa.

The award from TopDrawerSoccer.com is Penn State's first of the 2010 season, headlining the site's weekly awards. TopDrawerSoccer.com names 11 players a week in its honor roll.

Costa leads the Big Ten in Conference points and is tied for first in goals, while holding those two top spots amongst all Big Ten freshman in Conference games. The Hawaiian native shot up the Penn State charts to top the scoring ledger with her eight goals this season, putting her second on the team in points with 19.

10/21/2010 - Defender to remember. UOP Tigers coach says Kylee Ah Choy (89 Premier/Kamehameha) is among program's best

STOCKTON - The pain in Kylee Ah Choy's right ankle got progressively worse last fall, but it never became bad enough to get her off the field.

Ah Choy, a senior defender on the Pacific women's soccer team, faced a difficult choice halfway through last season after bone chips in her ankle caused her major discomfort after every match. The fiercely competitive Ah Choy told Dr. Scott Bethune of Stockton it was an easy choice.

"I had an option to medical redshirt or keep playing, and I chose to keep playing," Ah Choy said. "I couldn't see myself sitting and watching the rest of the season. It wasn't so terrible that I couldn't play, but it was a sharp pain. They told me the only risk was I might not be able to walk when I'm 40, which we'll see about."

Despite the pain, Ah Choy earned first-team All-Big West honors last season as well as being named first-team All-West Region. Ah Choy's ankle is now 100 percent after having surgery in December that removed the chips around the area and she's helped Pacific shut down opponents all season. The Tigers (6-6-3, 3-2 Big West) will seek their fourth consecutive victory when they host UC Davis (6-7-1, 1-3) at 7 tonight. Pacific has allowed just 17 goals this season, and coach Keith Coleman believes Ah Choy is the major reason why.

"She's the leader of the group," Coleman said. "Her strength is the way she reads the game and she's one of the surest tacklers in the conference. She was good last year, but she's twice all of that this season because she's more mobile. There's not enough things to say about how she's been playing."

Ah Choy didn't play much when she arrived as a freshman from Mililani, Hawaii, which drove her to focus and earn playing time. Coleman said she has been Pacific's best defender since the spring of her freshman year, and she was named team MVP by her teammates as a sophomore.

"As a defender you don't get the goal-scoring and all that credit, so being (named MVP) meant a lot to me because it meant my teammates appreciated me," said Ah Choy, 21, who will graduate in May with a degree in biological sciences before going back home for a year to plan her future.

Coleman believes Ah Choy is again playing like an MVP this season as the defense kept Pacific's season afloat while the offense struggled to score goals in nonconference play.

"She just gets it done on the field," said Coleman, in his 16th season with the Tigers. "I'd take her on a Pacific all-time team any day."

    Leahi Gives Back
Leahi Soccer Club believes that we are all very fortunate to be able to enjoy the game of soccer, and it important that we not take this for granted. Throughout each year, Leahi members give back to the community in many ways. Each February over 150 volunteers help at the Annual Great Aloha Run. In August, players and parents assist the Special Olympics. Recently, the club mobilized to collect soccer balls to send to Iraq. Here is a short article mentioning the effort.
